Through Their Work Designers Can Live Forever

Through Their Work Designers Can Live Forever

Designers live forever, that is something I believe wholeheartedly. Following the sudden deaths of Virgil Abloh and Theirry Mugler, I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about their artistry, influence, and how deeply they have touched the fashion industry over the length of their career. In different ways, they both have brought about change and shook the fashion world with their impactful innovations.

Through Off-White, Louis Vuitton men’s collection, or one of his many creative ventures, Virgil Abloh left a mark on the luxury streetwear industry that will continue to influence and inspire designers and the industry for future generations. His impact spread beyond the runway, through his “Post-Modern” scholarship fund which empowered aspiring Black designers through mentorship and scholarship. Abloh was a designer, artist, musician, and so much more. He had a vision of where fashion was headed within the future, and I have no doubt that his influence, strongly left behind through his work,  will guide the designers of tomorrow to that outcome.

“Theirry Mugler created some of the most beautiful silhouettes”, was the first thing I thought of when I heard of his passing. Mugler always tested the limits with his bold designs. Broad shoulders, cinched waists, and a futuristic mind brought about shocking runaways, season after season. He was the man behind unforgettable looks worn by Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and Madonna. My earliest memories of admiring his works were from watching Beyonce’s performances and my love for his designs have stuck ever since.

A groundbreaking designer can never die. Their contribution to the world of fashions makes them immortal. Their names will never go unspoken, and aspiring designs will continue to study their work and be influenced by their craft for generations to come. Although these iconic designers are no longer with us, their names will live on and we should allow their work and stories to inspire our passions and vocations for the future.
