Rework, Rewear, Restyle: Making the most of your wardrobe
There’s nothing worse than opening your closet and feeling as if you have absolutely nothing to wear. It’s easy to get tired of the clothing you always gravitate to, especially if you tend to style them the exact same way. Instead of letting your first instinct be to buy more pieces, think of the many ways to wear the garments you already have! Ever since I began looking at my clothes with an open mindset, it’s widened my ability to express myself through my clothes and even made me a more conscious shopper. Not only can this save you money, but it can also help you work toward creating a more sustainable wardrobe. Here are some garments you may have never thought to wear in a different way.
Wearing a skirt as a dress or top
One of my favorite ways to get the most wear out of my skirts is by wearing them as tops or dresses. Midi and maxi skirts can make excellent strapless dresses. Just pull them all the way up to your chest before zipping. Tight-fitting skirts can be worn like a bodycon top and a more flared skirt can be seen as an A-line. For more flowy skirts, cinching the waistline with a belt can be a great detail to add.
Styling a shirt over or under a dress
Layering with a dress is a super easy way to create a new look with garments you already have, whether it’s under or over the dress. Wearing a top under a dress invites more visual interest without losing the interest of the top of the dress. This is perfect for dresses with skinnier straps like slip dresses. Layering a top over a dress is perfect if you’d rather style the dress as if it was the skirt. It lets the top you pair it with have all the attention!
Tucking a dress into bottoms
Just because a dress has the features of a top and bottom, doesn’t mean they both have to be visible when you wear it. Layering pants over a form-fitting dress is an awesome way to get use out of it – it will look just as if you’re wearing a bodysuit. Sadly, this look is not as attainable for long or bulky dresses because of bunching, but layering a skirt can be a perfect solution!
Cropping tops
Restyling a top you already have so that it’s cropped is a super-easy way to get some different wear out of the clothes you already have in your closet. There are many ways to achieve this. One is by tying a knot in the front or back; this is perfect, especially for T-shirts. My favorite way to style a top is to tuck it in under a bra or camisole to create a cropped effect. If you ever have a top that you’re tired of wearing but don't want to get rid of, this is a great way to style it in new ways!
