How To Create a Personal Branding Video for a Job or Scholarship
This month, I applied for the NRF Next Generation Scholarship*. One of the tasks that was required for the scholarship was to create a personal branding video. To me, this sounded similar to an elevator pitch but in video form. I did some research to determine exactly what I should include in the video. I found that a personal branding video was a creative way to use media to tell someone like an employer about you and you career accomplishments/goals.
After this research and making the video, I combined some tips that may help if you ever find yourself needing to make a personal branding video!
1. Keep the timing short
Just like an elevator pitch, you don’t want this video to be too long. You won’t want to lose the watchers interest or ramble too much about little details. Keep it at maximum 2 minutes long. This should be the perfect amount of time to allow you to share everything you may need to!
2. Be In front of the Camera for at Least 30 seconds
The main goal of a branding video is for the viewer to get to know you! So, make sure you are Infront of the camera and talking for at least 30 seconds. This way the viewer can get a better idea about your personality and how you conduct yourself.
3. Don’t be afraid to brag
In this video you are trying to brand yourself by showing your creditability and experience, so it’s okay to brag a little! You can include images or videos of projects you have worked on or events you have attended. You can also sit down in front of the camera and explain how you have and will make your mark in the fashion industry.
4. Be creative!
Use a combination of pictures and videos that represent you. You may even want to use a voice over to explain certain images. If you are comfortable with video editing software, try incorporating graphics or interesting transitions in your video. Just make sure the video isn’t too busy and that you are keeping with the main goal of informing the viewer about yourself professionally.
5. Be yourself
You want to show who you really are because you are branding yourself. Anything you say or put in your video needs to be authentic and true. You shouldn’t twist the truth on your resume, or a job interview, so, you don’t want to do that in a personal branding video.
*Note: If you haven’t heard of the NRF Next Generation Scholarship you should look into applying next year. If you get past the first round of the selection process, you could receive a $1,000 travel stipend to attend the NRF Conference held every year in New York.
