Analyzing Paris Fashion Week S/S 22
Every season, designers present their collections during fashion week in New York, London, Milan and Paris. Personally, fashion weeks are my most anticipated event because I absolutely love seeing the looks from all the shows, hearing what people are buzzing about, and analyzing the week as well. In the time I’ve spent admiring the designs, locations, and vibe of this season’s Paris fashion week, I have noticed there is a whole new feel to the shows. Maybe it’s because I studied abroad in Paris this summer and am lusting over going back, but there is an emotion felt through this week. A feeling of regeneration and renewal.
Vivienne Westwood
I have always been a huge fan of Vivienne Westwood. She’s the ultimate cool girl when it comes to fashion and I greatly admire her brand’s unique approach to design. In the show this season, Andreas Kronthaler incorporated a significant sustainability approach – in that 98% of materials used are cruelty free and low impact and no use of virgin synthetic fabrics. Additionally, the wools are derived from “regenerative agriculture” farms. For this collection, the designs were more sophisticated but still true to the label, which I respect. The handbags in the looks really stood out to me and tied the intensely draped, unique cutout pieces together.
After viewing the shows in Paris, there are a few stand out trends that have been seen through many designers this season. One trend that has been repeated is the concept of bare fashion, meaning extreme cutouts, excessive skin showing, and sheer and strappy pieces. Ludovic de Saint Sernin embodied this trend on the runway this season. In my opinion, these looks are super funky and flattering if done correctly. Another interesting trend seen in shows such as Louis Vuitton, Acne Studios (loved this collection as well), and Loewe is silhouettes that add volume and structure. Incorporating this trend can easily elevate your look with the perfect amount of chic without looking too overdone. Living vicariously through the internet and seeing the stunning collections designers have exhibited during Paris fashion week has inspired me to upgrade my style and view for the upcoming season.
Chanel
For the show, Virginie Viard of Chanel took inspiration from past decades and Chanel designs made by Karl Lagerfield to create an incredible production. Influenced by one of Lagerfield’s early 90s shows, the show kicked off with the CC-branded briefs and swimsuits. Models strutted the runway wearing mini dresses, the classic tweed sets, black and gold color combos, and more swimwear silhouettes. To create that real 80s and 90s feel, photographers lined the stage snapping shots of the collection and highlighting the spirited relationship between the models and the clothes, all whilst George Michael’s “Freedom! ‘90” covered by Christine and the Queens played throughout the show.
Miu Miu
People are slowly returning back to school, work, and travel in Europe, and Miu Miu’s show captured just that. The collection has a back to school feel reflecting the back to normality Europe is currently experiencing. Overstressed short hemlines, chunky sweaters and low rise bottoms were a staple in this show which set a rebellious tone. For shoewear, models primarily wore loafers with chunky socks, which is a look I have been loving for a few seasons now.
