A Beginner's Guide to Career Development
Three easy steps to help you kickstart your career.
As a newcomer to the apparel program at Auburn, it can all feel pretty overwhelming. Whether you’re a freshman at Auburn, a recent transfer student, or you just changed majors, the fashion industry can make you feel like you’re falling behind very quickly.
Luckily, there are always ways to increase your experience and get involved. Here are the first few steps that will help get you noticed by possible employers and student organizations.
1. Build a resume
Canva is a great resource if you don’t really have the funds to invest in a professionally made resume. It’s cheap and has a ton of templates to choose from. I recommend using a template to start, but editing it to fit your personal brand. No one wants a bland resume, so make it your own and get creative with fonts, colors, and layout.
Pro-tip: Canva has templates for business cards too!
2. Find a mentor
Whether the mentor is an upperclassman in your major or someone actively working in the industry, it could open many doors for you. Not only do they help you make connections, but they also give life changing advice regarding school, career development, and the industry itself. If you’re struggling to find one, reach out to Auburn graduates on LinkedIn. The “Auburn Family” is not just a slogan, it’s a very real loyalty alumni have to the school and the students who study here.
3. Get industry experience
I know it can be easier said than done, but once you finally open that door, it doesn’t close. Whether you gain experience through internships or part-time jobs, it really helps build your resume. For employers, they need to see that you are committed to fashion and that you have enough background knowledge to understand job training. Even if it’s a summer or holiday job, it can make all the difference.
