Why Y2K?
We have all seen the growing popularity of 2000’s fashion trends; not only was this trend popular last year but it’s proving to still be on the rise in 2022. From social media to Fashion Week, why has the Year 2000 fashion proved to be one of the largest trends?
It’s true that history repeats itself and this definitely applies to fashion. Two decades after the style first became popular it’s popping up again! What exactly made the trend come back? The reason would be social media, specifically TikTok. Gen-Z adapted the styles of the early 2000’s into their wardrobes and it soon spread around the social media platform, similar to how most things popularize today. However, Gen-Z is a generation that never got to really experience the Y2K trends when they first became popular. This could possibly be why so many others in this younger generation latched onto the trend; they wanted to partake in the styles that they couldn’t experience. From thrifting Y2K pieces to seeing them pop up in the stores, Y2K flourished once again.
After the explosion on social media, the trend moved to the runways. Fashion Weeks all over the world have seen the comeback of Y2K in designer’s collections. During Milan Fashion Week 2021, fashion house Blumarine debuted their Spring 2022 Ready to Wear collection. This collection was completed with butterfly tops, low rise pants, and pops of pink. We also can’t forget to mention Miu Miu’s Spring Summer 2022 collection showcasing extreme low-rise miniskirts! However, it hasn’t stopped there. This year’s Fashion Weeks brought even more of the 2000’s aesthetic to consumers globally. Fall/Winter 2022-2023 shows continued to focus on low-rise pants, specifically jeans. Even in Versace’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection this year we saw low rise pants, some even complete with chains. The collection was even complete with corset tops, miniskirts, and baguette bags.
So, what do you need to be on top of the trend? Many fashion sites are predicting what the most popular Y2K pieces will be this year. For blouses, baby tees, corset tops, and even sheer fabrics will be all the rage (I know I already own my fair share of corset tops). For bottoms, miniskirts and denim styles, more specifically wide-leg and low-rise. Strappy heels or sandals can be added complete the look. When in doubt, wear some trendy platform converse sneakers! Lastly, don’t forget your baguette bag, as this bag style is continuing to be a staple in every fashion-lover’s closet.
