Interview with Jackie Carr: Auburn’s Believe Program Winner Attends New York Fashion Week
Attending New York Fashion Week is a dream for thousands of fashion students, but it became a reality for Auburn student Jackie Carr. Jackie was selected as a winner of Auburn University’s Believe Program, an initiative that connects students with industry leaders, trend forecasting, and hands-on experiences in the fashion world. As part of the program, Jackie and fellow student Lizzie Minor attended NYFW in February, immersing themselves in the world of high fashion and gaining insight into trend analysis and global fashion markets.
The Believe Program is designed to give Auburn students real-world fashion industry exposure. Each year, Auburn apparel students research key trends and lifestyle insights within the campus community, then create trend boards to present to Auburn’s licensees and retailers. In addition to learning about product sourcing, design, sustainability, and retail buying, students may also get the opportunity to present their findings to a panel of professionals. From this talented group, one or two students are selected to represent Auburn at NYFW. This year, that honor went to Jackie Carr and Lizzie Minor.
I caught up with Jackie to learn more about her experience and how it has influenced her career aspirations in the fashion industry.
Q: What drew you to participate in Auburn’s BELIEVE student program? What was the application process like?
I was super excited about the opportunity to go to New York Fashion Week, but I also saw it as a great way to build my resume and gain real-world experience in the fashion industry. The application involved answering three open-ended questions about why we wanted to be part of the program and what our future goals were. It prompted me to reflect on where I see myself in the fashion world.
Q: Can you describe your reaction to being selected to attend New York Fashion Week?
I was so excited—honestly, a little shocked too. I wasn’t sure what to expect, especially since I hadn’t been to New York in a while. I was definitely nervous at first, especially about meeting new people, but once I arrived and started connecting with others, the nerves went away. Everyone was so welcoming.
Q: What were some of the most exciting runway shows or events you attended at NYFW?
One of the highlights was attending the Sergio Hudson show—it was incredible to see his work in person. I also had a fan-girl moment when I saw Serena from Love Island, which is one of my favorite shows. It was surreal being surrounded by so many stylish and influential people.
Q: Were there any key trends or themes you noticed throughout the week?
Definitely! I saw a lot of fur—both real and faux—and ballet flats were having a major moment. I also noticed that monochromatic outfits were really popular, which I loved. I actually planned all my looks around single-color themes, so it was fun to see that trend show up on the streets too. Everyone had such unique style, and it was inspiring to see how creative people were with their fashion.
Q: How did this experience change your perspective on the fashion industry?
It gave me a whole new appreciation for the industry. I had the chance to meet people from a talent agency that manages IMG models, as well as managers for influencers and fashion creatives. It was intense, but it showed me just how many different paths there are in fashion. I left feeling more inspired than ever.
Q: Did you have the opportunity to network with any designers, buyers, or industry professionals?
Yes! Besides the agency professionals, I also met several young women who had recently started their own embroidery businesses. Hearing about their journeys and how they built something right after college was really eye-opening. It made everything feel more attainable.
Q: What was your biggest takeaway from the Believe Program and NYFW?
Before this experience, I didn’t think I wanted to move to New York after graduation—I thought it would be too expensive, too fast-paced, and just overwhelming. But being there changed my mind. I realized I could make it work, and now I can’t imagine wanting to go anywhere else. The people were honestly the highlight. The other students I met through the NYFW program have become good friends, and we’ve stayed in touch. It created such a strong support system outside of Auburn.
Q: What advice would you give to other Auburn students interested in applying for the Believe Program?
If you’re even thinking about it—just apply! Even if you don’t end up going to New York Fashion Week, the process itself is so valuable. It’s something you can add to your resume, and it pushes you to think seriously about your goals. It’s a great way to get experience outside of the classroom and show initiative.
Jackie’s experience at NYFW is a testament to the unique opportunities available through Auburn’s College of Human Sciences. Her journey highlights the importance of embracing new experiences, pushing past comfort zones, and building meaningful connections in the fashion industry.
