Makeup in the News!

Makeup in the News!

We hear about celebrities, politics, businesses, health and wellness, but rarely do we hear about makeup in the news. I did some digging and wanted to do a write up on recent articles where beauty has been in the spotlight!

The first headline that caught my eye was ‘31 Celebrities who Gave up Makeup in 2020’. We all have had quite a different year to say the least, and so many celebrities have decided to give their skin a much-needed break from all of the products they typically use. Demi Lovato shared her first no-makeup selfie in years, and this inspired many others to follow suit. This includes Hillary Duff, Rihanna, Rita Wilson, Vanessa Hudgens and Zoë Kravitz. Nikki Bella posted a photo to Instagram and wrote, “It's pretty amazing to start to see the real, natural you again, right? Without all the beauty appointments and makeup every day. I hope in this time we can start to love ourselves more. Appreciate the flaws, the changes, our age."

Have you watched Netflix’s Selling Sunset? The hit show’s big star Christine Quinn is currently being called out by Katrina Guevara, the makeup artist who did her wedding look, for not receiving any credit. Apparently, Christine has stated multiple times that she does her own makeup, does not have a glam squad, and also likes to use photoshop. Guevara took to Instagram to describe the disrespect she feels for not being respected and credited, as she works freelance without a representation agency. You can check out her full post on Instagram, and her username is @katguervamua.

Jeffree Star seems to be a name that is always somewhere in beauty news, and he is currently being sued by Anna Nicole Smith’s Estate. According to The Blast, “Anna Nicole’s estate recently discovered Jeffree is selling a lipstick called ‘Anna Nicole’ and using Anna Nicole’s name (also using her signature red color. They accuse him of using her likeness on the marketing/packaging materials. The plaintiffs say Jeffree never obtained permission from the state to use Anna Nicole on his products. Despite this, they claim he sold numerous products with her name” (Ryan Naumann). This is not a good look for Jeffree, and it seems as if his brand is always under hot water.

Now switching from a Hollywood story, there has been newsworthy makeup updates reported in Bloomfield, Ohio. High school senior Ruthie Kaiser has recently gained an immense following on TikTok (2.4 million) for the amazing looks she is able to create using her face as a canvas. According to Steve Vesey on 21 WFMJ, “She's currently working with Netflix for a second time on a project, giving her a heavy duty resume as well as a platform to inspire others to harness the power of social media at any age”. She says that the looks she creates can take anywhere from six to seven hours and that she loves to inspire others with her looks.

One article that really caught my attention was titled ‘Bobbi Brown’s New Makeup Line’. Bobbi Brown is an incredible businesswoman who started selling nude lipsticks, and then later sold her company for $74.5 million to Estée Lauder. Although it seemed as if she was out of the beauty industry, she is back with a new line called Jones Road. The goal of this line is to give women tools to wear makeup that looks natural. Bobbi Brown has always tried to create products to help enhance natural beauty, and this new line will streamline this process by offering six simple products. According to the Jones Road website, “The world doesn’t need more beauty products, it just needs better beauty products”. Their products will be considered clean by excluding many of the bad ingredients that are currently in so many of the products we use every day.
