Is Red the New Black for Winter 2023/24?

Is Red the New Black for Winter 2023/24?

Dark and moody shades have recently been dominating the fashion world, and as we look ahead to the 2023 and 2024 runway season, it's clear that red is set to take center stage. The spectrum of red tones have been commanding attention and have made a bold statement on catwalks around the world in the recent past. In this article, we will delve into the fiery forecast for red in both runway and street fashion for the 23/24 chilly seasons, exploring the enduring allure of red in fashion forecasting, shedding light on the psychology, wearability, and versatility of this vibrant color.

Red has long been a beloved color in the world of fashion, and for good reason. It possesses a unique ability to convey a wide range of emotions and messages, making it a versatile and powerful choice for designers. It instantly commands attention, while being bold and passionate. Psychologically, red is associated with a range of emotions, from love and desire to power and anger.

Fashion has also always been a reflection of societal values and movements. In recent years, red has been used as a symbol of empowerment and protest, such as the Me 2 Movement. This trend will continue into 2023/24, with designers using red to convey messages of strength, resilience, and unity. Gender inclusive hues like deep reds can be seen peeking through countless runway shows this season, which is in stark contrast to last season's obsession with Barbie Pink. WGSN, the world's leading consumer trend forecaster’s key color for S/S 23, is called Luscious Red, and I can assure you, pops of a dark cherry red can be found within the majority of collections showcased in NYFW for fall/winter 2023. Gucci’s new runway for s/s 2024 presented us with a beautiful collection of cherry red handbags, heels, glasses, and coats. Accessories play a crucial role in runway fashion, and for the upcoming season, red accessories will be in high demand. They can add a pop of color to otherwise simplistic clothing ensembles.

In 2023/2024, expect to see a resurgence of red in evening wear and cocktail dresses, as designers aim to capture the essence of desire and elegance post Covid-19. Red gowns, dresses, and suits will be adorned with intricate embellished detailing, luxurious fabrics, and dramatic silhouettes that are sure to turn heads. One of the standout trends for the upcoming season is the use of monochromatic red outfits. Houses like Alexander McQueen, Tory Burch, Ferragamo, and BlueMarine are embracing head-to-toe red ensembles, creating a bold and striking aesthetic. These monochromatic looks are not limited to a single shade of red; rather, they incorporate various hues and textures of red to create depth and visual interest.

Not only can the dark, warm red hue be found on the runway, but fashion influencers and celebrities like Sophia Richie La Grange and Hailey Bieber are stepping out in outfits featuring pops of red hues.

Red is a huge timeless and investment color, but many tend to stay away from the hue because of its intensity. If you're not already incorporating it into your wardrobe, now is the time to start. Wearing the color red can promote confidence and boldness. For example, a red dress can turn heads at a party, while a red power suit can exude authority in a boardroom. If you're not sure how to wear red, here are a few tips:

  • Start with a small pop of red. A red lipstick or scarf can add a touch of color to any outfit.

  • If you're feeling bold, try a tailored red suit, or gown.

  • For a more casual look, pair red with denim or white.

  • Paint your nails a warm winter red.

As for how to use red in your wardrobe according to your color analysis, here are a few tips:

  • If you're a warm season, you'll look best in shades of red that have a yellow undertone, such as coral or tomato red.

  • If you're a cool season, you'll look best in shades of red that have a blue undertone, such as ruby or wine red.

  • If you're an autumn season, you'll look best in shades of red that have an orange undertone, such as brick red or burgundy.

  • If you're a winter season, you'll look best in shades of red that have a purple undertone, such as fuchsia or scarlet.

No matter what your season is, red is a color that can add a touch of glamor and sophistication to any outfit. Red works as a symbol of empowerment, so don't be afraid to experiment with it and see how it looks on you. It’s time to paint the town red!
