How to Develop Your Personal Style

How to Develop Your Personal Style

One of my favorite things about fashion is that it’s different for everyone. There are no rules except to express yourself. For me, fashion has become an outlet to share my creativity and personality, but developing my personal style has been a lifelong process that is constantly evolving! Figuring out your personal style can help you shop better and feel more confident in your clothes. So, here are some things that helped me develop my style, that you can implement into your journey!

One thing you can do to help develop your personal style is discover people, brands, and art that you relate to. Finding things that make you happy is a great step towards developing your personal style. For me, designers like Anna Sui and Marc Jacobs are big inspirations, and I try to implement their style into the way I dress. I also follow creators on TikTok who dress in clothes I like, to give me inspiration, and even give me ideas on where to shop. Creating Pinterest boards and curating your social media feeds with things you love can help you better envision your style! But be careful, you should avoid clinging onto one person, brand, or “aesthetic” to develop your personal style. It is important to take inspiration from many sources to create something personal for you. Not simply dress like someone else.

Developing your personal style should start right in your closet. A complete closet clean-out is not the most responsible plan of action when it comes to evolving your style. Instead, take a better look at your pieces and discover the new ways you can style them. Slowly start introducing new pieces into your wardrobe to experiment with different styles and create new looks. Developing your personal style isn’t supposed to be the ultimate rebrand. It’s the process of figuring out how to use your clothes to represent yourself, and that takes time!

Dont be afraid to experiment! If you have a style idea that you have never seen someone do before, don’t be afraid to test the limits of your style. Trial and error are inevitable when you decide you want to change up the way you dress. I can think of a handful of outfits that I look back at and cringe at, but it is all part of the process. Remember, what is the worst that can happen?

Lastly, remember your style is meant to evolve. We are always changing, and the way you like to dress will too! Remember, someone will always have something to say about the choices you make. At the end of the day, if you’re happy with what you’re wearing, then that’s all that matters.
