5 Things I Learned from the NRF Foundation Student Program
My role as the National Retail Federation Foundation Ambassador for Auburn this year has been a really special one. The NRF Foundation provides incredible opportunities for all students, but especially those in apparel-related majors. Over the past year, I have had many experiences that are in part due to the work of the NRF Foundation and the byproduct of attending the 2019 Student Program.
Here are five things I learned from the 2019 NRF Foundation Student Program that I believe will help you land the internship or job of your dreams.
1. People want to help you
During the Student Program last year there was an executive mentorship experience in which executives from many different companies went table to table talking to students. Almost every time they sat down they said something along the lines of; “I’m really excited to talk to you. What can I help you understand?” They wanted to give insight into their careers in hopes that a student at the table would have similar aspirations and learn from their experiences. So, ask for help. Ask for advice. People love passing on their wisdom. It may seem like you are being an imposition, but you’re not- I promise.
2. Accessibility is key
It is means more to you that you intern with XYZ company, than it does to them. That being said, you need to be accessible. You should respond to emails promptly and work around their schedule when setting up interviews. Additionally, I recently heard that one of the fastest ways to get your resume thrown out is to have it titled “Resume-3” or something like that. Make sure the title has your fist and last name. You want to make everything as easy for the hiring manager because it shows that you are considerate and value their time.
3. There is room for everyone
When I first walked into the Student Program last year, I instantly thought everyone there was my competition. As the week went on, I learned that was simply not true. There were students from across the country with a vast array of interests. Meaning, my career goals were different, and I would never have to “compete” against them. There truly is room for everyone in the world of retail, it is a big industry. I know it can be hard, but try not to view those around as your competition. Look to them as individuals who you can learn from and network with.
4. Showing interest matters
Reach out to companies you want to work for. Add the recruiter on LinkedIn. Fair or unfair, the saying “it’s not what you know, but who you know” is really true. Show initiative. It could be the difference between you and another applicant.
5. Connection over content
Companies are not hiring robots, they are hiring real people who need to be sociable, pleasant, and driven. Show your interviewer that you are excited to be there and demonstrate why you would like to be a part of their team. Showing excitement and genuine interest for the role is just as important as your technical skills. Be yourself, the interviewer will appreciate it!
These are just a few things I learned at the 2019 NRF Foundation Student Program. There are incredible opportunities to connect with companies resulting in personal and professional growth. Gina Madalloni, a current Auburn Senior said; “When I attended the Student Program the spring of my junior year, I was fortunate enough to connect with Macy’s through their Tour and Talk. I loved the company culture and what the possibility of a career at Macy’s could look like for me. At the career fair, I immediately made my way to connect with the recruiters again and inquired about the possibility of a summer internship. I went through the application process immediately after leaving the career fair. Two weeks later, I was offered an internship for the summer of 2019 and I have recently accepted a full-time offer starting in the summer of 2020!”
Gina is a prime example of the kind of exposure and success that can come from attending the Student Program. I am so grateful for all I learned at the 2019 NRF Foundation Student Program and cannot wait to return to New York City again this January for more.
