5 Summer Trends I Discovered on TikTok

5 Summer Trends I Discovered on TikTok

I don’t know about you, but as soon as the quarantine hit us back in March, I found myself having a lot more time on my hands. And like most people, I caved into downloading TikTok. Little did I know how one app would be able to consume so much of my time. However, I’m not going to complain, because if it wasn’t for this app I wouldn’t have found such amazing fashion TikTok accounts. In today’s post, I wanted to share five of my favorite fashion trends that I discovered on TikTok.

1. Small Top, Big Pants

A common theme I have been seeing on TikTok is the reemergence of the Y2K fashion style, and I’m so glad this style is making a comeback in 2020. I’ve seen a lot of people sporting a crop top with baggy jeans, joggers, or cargo pants. I love this trend because it is such a perfect blend between feminine and masculine style. It also creates a beautiful silhouette that accentuates your curves!

2. Big Top, Big Pants

I’ve always been an admirer of street fashion even though I found it very intimidating to pull off. As someone who is only 5’2, pairing a baggy T-shirt with baggy pants just seemed like a no-go for me; but, when styled right it is honestly one of my new favorite silhouettes. I saw a lot of TikTok fashion accounts posting videos showing off their favorite outfits, specifically using this “big top, big pants” silhouette. Watching these short fashion videos on TikTok really inspired me to find ways to expand my style past my comfort zone. And once I took that leap, I fell in love with trends I would’ve never considered wearing before!

3. Scarf Tops

I was so happy to see scarf tops as a trend this summer. They’re so versatile in the ways you can style them, and you can find them in so many patterns and colors. These scarves are also easy to thrift! After watching a bunch of tutorials on TikTok on how to style these scarves, I eventually purchased and styled one! I’ve found that scarf tops look cute with a lot of different bottoms including jeans, denim shorts, and cargo pants! You can even use them as cover-ups for the beach. The possibilities are endless, and I have included my personal styling of it below!

4. Loungewear

Considering the fact that many of us were spending a lot of time indoors this summer due to the social distancing restrictions, loungewear became a go-to. However, what I’ve noticed, especially on a lot of TikTok fashion accounts, was that people were taking loungewear to a whole new level. Loungewear became more than just old sweats we might have laying around, but rather an entire fashion statement. Several loungewear items that rose in popularity this summer were biker shorts, loungewear sets, and, of course, sweats! One of my favorite styles of loungewear is cropped sweat-shorts! After seeing a lot of people styling them, I took it upon myself to crop and hem my old sweatpants into shorts!

5. Tie-dye

I saved my favorite trend for last: I saw countless tutorials on TikTok explaining how to tie-dye clothing as well as how to style it. I noticed tie-dye was also incorporated into a lot of loungewear pieces, which comes to no surprise because loungewear played a huge role in this year’s summer trends, as I noted before. Tie-dye can certainly elevate any basic clothing item you have if you decide to do your own DIY project. Any tie-dye piece can make for a perfect summer look, especially those dyed with bright colors!

After sharing some of my favorite trends that I’ve discovered on TikTok, I find it only appropriate to also list some of my favorite fashion content-creators on this app. If you are looking for some more style inspiration, I recommend you check out the creators, who I have listed below by username.

@wisdm8, @mscrissy, @scarfxce.xo, @inthesejeans, and @pukababy

I know that this Covid-19 situation has taken a toll on all of us- it has changed life as we knew it and turned most of our plans on its head. But, in a way, if it wasn’t for this whole quarantine, I don’t think I would have been able to find the style inspiration that I did this summer from TikTok. It was amazing to see so many people dedicate this time to focus on themselves, and even more amazing to be able to see their personal growth through apps like TikTok. By watching these TikTok fashion videos, I became inspired to try and find my own aesthetic and experiment with styles I’ve never worn before. If there is anything I’ve learned during this quarantine; it is that there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting ready and dressing up just to chill at home by yourself!
