1. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
A list about fashion movies isn’t complete without mentioning the yardstick of all other fashion movies. The Devil Wears Prada, loosely inspired by Anna Wintour and Vogue, follows Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, and her new assistant Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway). Andy learns how to survive Miranda, her new coworkers, and the fashion industry as an outsider. As a thrilling and entertaining insider look at the fashion industry, this film is definitely not the average movie you might pick out of a pile of… stuff.

2. Coco Before Chanel (2009
Coco Before Chanel is a 2009 French biopic centered around Coco Chanel, played by French actress Audrey Tautou, who is most known for playing the namesake in Amelie. Coco Before Chanel focuses on Chanel’s early life before she became one of the leading designers of the early 20th century. The film showcases Chanel’s early experiences as an orphan making a living as a seamstress segueing into her start in designing and selling hats. Admirers of the classic French brand will appreciate Audrey’s portrayal of the eternal fashion icon.
3. Dior and I (2015)
Dior and I is a 2015 documentary about Raf Simons, former creative director of Dior from 2012-2015, and his journey to create his first collection for Dior. The film shows what it takes to create a collection, and what it takes to produce fashion in the couture world.

4. Funny Face (1957)
As a personal favorite, Funny Face stars Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire in a musical centered around a young bookseller, Jo Stockton (Audrey Hepburn) becoming a model for Quality magazine led by Maggie Prescott (Kay Thompson) and photographed by Dick Avery (Fred Astaire). Jo and Dick fall in love against a Paris backdrop as Jo learns to respect fashion as art. And Givenchy fans, rejoice! Hubert de Givenchy worked with Edith Head to develop Audrey’s stunning wardrobe for the film.

5. The True Cost (2015)
While this selection isn’t as glamorous as the previous ones, the fashion industry continues to evolve, and consumers must evolve with it. The True Cost is a harrowing documentary showing why fast fashion is really as cheap as it is. Sustainability is one of the most important factors of fashion to consider as it moves forward, and this documentary shows glimpses of the working conditions of employees who make clothing and the pollution in other countries caused by textile waste piling up. The True Cost should inspire this generation of fashion students and fashion admirers to make changes to their habits so we can utilize our passion for fashion to positively impact the world.
The True Cost is available to stream on Tubi and Amazon Prime
