5 Investment Pieces & Where to Buy Them
How to live sustainably through your purchases and the brands you support.
Everyone knows there are a few clothing items you shouldn’t live without. However, for us students, investments are hard. Hard on our wallets, our buyer’s guilt, and our inherently indecisive nature. Additionally, it is important to us that the brands we wear are representative of our generation and who we are. These pieces are staples for our long-term wardrobe, so they need to be built to last. Sustainable brands make clothing with this in mind, while giving back to the environment. So, without further ado, I present to you the five most important items for a college student’s closet in Auburn, Alabama, and the brands to buy them from. Happy Shopping!
1. THAT Dress
You know what I’m talking about. At one time or another, we’ve all had that one dress that just fit perfectly. This is a dress that can be dressed up or down and maintains value as the seasons change. When we start college, a lot about our life changes and with it so does our wardrobe. Perhaps you swapped your dress for athleisure, or maybe it simply doesn’t fit you anymore. Either way, it’s time for a new one. This dress at Amour Vert fits the role perfectly. The brand prides itself on its own signature fabrics, specifically designed to be durable and sustainable.
2. Jeans that actually fit
Jeans are expensive, especially a good pair. However, the men’s jeans you bought for $15 are just not going to cut it for business casual. A good pair of jeans can get you far. It’s important you feel good and look good in your jeans. Levi’s are a classic, with a great size selection for women and men’s, they work with all your needs. Plus, you’ll be supporting a brand that promotes initiatives to reduce water waste, improve farming practices, and up-cycle vintage products.
3. A staple jacket
Having that one jacket you can count on, no matter the season or the outfit, is integral to your closet’s success. Despite all of the jackets I own, there is one that I will never leave behind. You deserve a jacket that you would risk your life to save from a house fire. Mine is a leather jacket. Yours could be suede or denim, maybe even a blazer or a trench. Make it your own. Whatever you decide, a good place to start is Madewell. With fair trade denim and puffer jackets insulated with a material made out of re-cycled bottles, you’re sure to find a great option.
4. Trousers
Trousers look cute with everything. You can pair them with a t-shirt for a trendy casual outfit. You can pair them with a blouse for a job interview. You can pair them with heels, boots, sandals, or sneakers for whatever your daily/seasonal needs may be. I would recommend a pair of black trousers, they come in a variety of colors and patterns that work for whatever you feel best in. This pair is from Reformation, a favorite brand of mine for all clothing items. They are known for their well-made products and their resiliency in the fight for a more sustainable industry.
5. Boots
Boots are a cute, comfortable shoe that can be worn year-round and with a variety of outfits. A chelsea boot, a combat boot, a rider boot- the possibilities are endless. Just get a pair that you feel matches your style. Boots are great to wear no matter the outfit and getting a comfortable pair that lasts is vital to both your feet and your wallet. Out of everything on this list, I would suggest investing in a reliable pair of boots the most. Coclico is a brand known not only for their reliable shoes, but also their dedication to environmental integrity. In 2013, the brand won the Source Award for their work with sustainable fashion in footwear.
