Summer of Sun

Summer of Sun

While thinking about and looking into some current beauty trends, there was one that hit close to home for me this summer. Many sites were reporting the same trend over and over: sun protection as self-care. This summer is all about promoting the importance of SPF and sun protection in skincare. As I am completing my internship in sunny West Palm Beach, Florida, I could not agree more with this being a trend.

As I have gotten older, I have realized the importance of taking care of your skin and the key role that sun protection plays in that. I hate to admit that I’ve been burned one too many times and at our age it doesn’t heal as easily as it once has. When you are a kid, a sunburn does not seem so bad. You might have even had the “It will turn into a tan” mentality. Nowadays, a burn is a burn. I am red as a lobster for a while and it never “Turns into a tan”. If anything, it just slowly peels away. Then I am just as I was before, only a layer of skin down.

These days I try to be better about religiously applying SPF. Especially while residing in “The Sunshine State”. Let me tell you, the Florida sun is no joke. When it comes to a more traditional form of sunscreen, I am a big fan of Sun Bum; I use and love both the body and face sunscreen. Over the years, I have tried many face sunscreens with the Sun Bum original SPF face lotion always coming out on top. Having both acne-prone and extremely oily skin can make it challenging to find a good face sunscreen. I have tried others that have had terrible consequences, making me break out. Sun Bum has never given me any trouble and has become my ride-or-die. It also doesn't hurt that all their products have a delicious tropical scent, that transports you right into summer.

As a result of brands picking up on this trend, there are now tons of ways to sneak SPF into your routine. If you go on Sephora's website there is a sunscreen tab that can take you to a page with an assortment of products. This shows you that they really are putting sun protection in just about everything. There are eye creams, moisturizers, lip balms, foundations, and much more. One of my favorite products to have as an addition or just to make sure that I have SPF on is the Rare Beauty positive light tinted moisturizer with SPF 20. This allows you to still be wearing make-up while getting protection. Then to touch up as the day goes on, I like to use the Supergoop (re)setting powder with SPF 35. That way I can touch up my make-up and sunscreen all in one swipe. This product is also great for applying sunscreen to your scalp. You can easily dust it on and it won’t make your hair oily.

With all of these options, it makes it easy for anyone to participate in this trend; even though sun protection is less about participating in a trend and more about looking out for your overall well-being. It is amazing that sun protection is seen as a form of self-care now. It makes applying sunscreen less of a task and casts it in a different light. With SPF being included in so many skincare and makeup products it makes it less complicated to get your protection in. Wearing sunscreen is one of the best and easiest ways to protect your skin's appearance and health at any age. Used regularly, sunscreen helps prevent sunburn, skin cancer, and premature aging. I feel like there should be no disagreement; these are all things everyone wants. So, start wearing your sunscreen and enjoy some fun in the sun!
