Beauty is Art
As our school year comes to a close, I have been reflecting on the numerous memories that have been made the past two semesters— the good and the bad. I cannot help but think how my definitions of certain things has been altered. My perspective has shifted on many subjects, but I want to focus on the main topic of beauty.
Beauty is art. There is nothing else that can be presented in thousands of different forms yet be perceived by two opinions of whether it is beautiful or if it is not. For example, my roommate loves cats. She has one herself and adores it; she believes her cat is beautiful. However, I am severely allergic to cats and because of this altering my physical state, which then alters my perspective, I do not find them beautiful. On the other hand, in our shared apartment, we have a red cat vase that holds flowers. The vase is in the shape of a cat, yet I love the vase and I think it is beautiful. This might have been an obscure example to represent the shifting definition of beauty, but it shows how remarkable the human mind works.
This year my mind has shifted a lot, but in aspects that have more meaning than a cat vase. There have been people that I look upon in a new light because their beauty was unveiled in a way I had never experienced before. For example, I have a friend who loves the color pink and whenever she sees objects that are pink, she lights up like a birthday candle. I am not particularly fond of pink, however, the way it brings my friend happiness, I now love pink— not because of its appearance but because of the joy it brings to my friend.
All of this to say, it is admirable for your opinions to change about what you think is striking and what is not. Now-a-days, no one wants to change how they think about things because they are afraid it will appear they were wrong, and others will judge them for their decision. It is honorable to change your mind because that means you are growing into your own thoughts, aesthetic, lifestyle and your own person; that is beautiful! It is beautiful that each of us uniquely finds things in everyday life that we find lovely, which ultimately is what we are composed of. We are made distinct by what we find beautiful and this in itself is art.
