Cher: A Look Into Her Iconic Looks and the Impression She Made on Fashion

After headlining the rebirth of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show a couple weeks ago and the overall influence of 70’s fashion coming back in style, I was inspired to take a glance back into some of Cher’s most iconic looks and how she has influenced the fashion industry. Cher is most well known for her bold outfits and stepping outside of the box. Breaking down barriers of “normality”, Cher has been deemed a pioneer in the costume and clothing world. People started taking notice of Cher's style with the launch of the Sonny and Cher show in 1971. Throughout the show Cher and Sonny, her husband at the time, would sing, dance, and act changing into different extravagant looks for each performance.

One of Cher’s most memorable outfits from the early ’70s would be her 1973 Oscars look. Cher stepped out in a breathtaking gold embellished crop top and long skirt years before the popularity of the crop top hit the market. This was one of the looks that made viewers start to associate Cher with the potential to become a fashion icon of the time: nobody was doing it like her.

After the Sonny and Cher show climbed in popularity, Cher premiered her own solo show in 1975 titled “Cher.” Some of Cher’s most well-known looks come from this TV series when she introduced her famous costume reveals. Each performance she would be wearing some sort of two-piece outfit and would take off a covering piece as she strutted down the stage.

Cher’s daring sense of style is something we can all incorporate into our lives. She is a wonderful example of how beautiful it can be to take risks and not be afraid to stand out. Let Cher be an example of how powerful individuality is, and what makes us so wonderful as humans is our ability to be different from one another. In the words of Cher herself, “All of us invent ourselves, some of us just have more imagination than others.” Cher can inspire us all to invent ourselves however we want to, especially through fashion!
