AI Changing the Future of Fashion

Artificial intelligence, AI, is a set of technologies that computers use to create and perform a variety of functions. AI capabilities can range from analyzing data to generating ideas and photos. AI works by analyzing patterns in human cognition. Companies are leveraging AI to cut back on expenses and save time. While AI brings numerous benefits to the real industry, it also poses challenges.

AI is an innovation in the evolving fashion industry. For example, with a few prompts, AI can transform a piece of art into an image. However, human input is invaluable to the creative process because the fashion industry needs a little human touch. Currently, the fashion industry is talking about what future jobs in fashion will look like with AI at the forefront of the industry. There have even been rumors of a future “AI fashion week.” Beyond design, companies are using artificial intelligence as leverage to reach a larger consumer base. 

One of the biggest areas AI is changing is in supply chain management. It enables brands to pull up historical data and predict future sales causing brands to not have excess inventory. As someone studying both supply chain management and apparel merchandising, I find these AI-driven advancements especially intriguing. AI offers businesses endless opportunities, but it also raises concerns about the potential loss of jobs. Companies must implement AI responsibly, ensuring it complements rather than replaces human workers. As well as workers must adapt and learn new skills to be able to make a valuable contribution to the fashion industry.

Personally, I have been using AI for projects in my Aesthetics for Fashion class at Auburn. I have been using AI to generate images based on the prompts I provide. I find it fascinating how quickly AI can generate images. I am eager to see where AI will take the fashion industry, and how humans will help with this exciting change. While AI’s future remains unknown, it is fascinating to see where it will lead.
